Did you know that Black History Month originally started out as a week, that being the second week in February. People ask, “Why February?” Because it encompasses the birthday of Fedrick Douglass, a social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer and statesmen considered the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an alumnus of the University of Chicago, along with his friends, founded this celebration which we still recognize today as a commemoration of Black and African American excellence honoring Black activists, musicians, leaders, public figures, inventors, and much more, who have made an impact on our culture, society, and civil liberties.
