Across the United States, access to gender-affirming care is in crisis. As of 2025, over 120,000 transgender youth live in states where essential medical care is banned. These policies not only defy medical evidence, but result in rising suicide rates, skyrocketing healthcare costs, and widening disparities.
The American Crisis in Gender-Affirming Care Access is a comprehensive policy brief that examines the full scope of these restrictions: their legal mechanisms, public health impacts, economic inefficiencies, and standing in global human rights law. Grounded in data and driven by urgency, this report offers a roadmap for restoring access, protecting trans lives, and upholding healthcare as a human right.

After a temporary closure earlier this year, our Dental Clinic is taking action to meet urgent needs and restore access to care.
- Waitlist Recovery Pilot – We are now scheduling and treating patients who were waiting during the closure, reducing the backlog and ensuring those still in need can reconnect with care.
- Emergency Walk-In Pilot – Beginning September 18, we’ll offer two same-day emergency appointments each day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) for patients with urgent dental needs.
These efforts are part of our commitment to making sure every member of our community has timely access to essential dental services.

Our mission extends beyond the provision of health services; we actively cultivate a sense of belonging for our community. There is something going on at the health center every single day, whether it is at our Community Living Room, TransThrive Drop-in Center, or The Lotus Project.

San Francisco Community Health Center celebrates and attends to the health and wellness of the communities that define San Francisco—immigrant and communities of color, queer, trans, unhoused people, and all of us who are most impacted by oppression—through comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health services. We believe that health care starts with healing justice and meeting the basic needs of our communities. Our culturally informed services are designed by the very people we serve.
